Global Lighting Technologies to start production at new factory in 2Q16

LED-based light guide plate maker Global Lighting Technologies (GLT) is constructing a factory at the Hsinchu Science Park, central Taiwan, and will begin production at the factory in the second quarter of 2016, according to the company.

GLT shipped 13 million light guide plates used in illuminated keyboards in notebooks and eight million units for LCD TVs in 2015, the company said.

While light guide plates shipped in 2015 were mainly used in 49-inch LCD TVs, those to be shipped in 2016 will be used in 55- and 65-inch LCD TVs mainly, GLT indicated. In addition to China-, Europe- and Japan-based LCD TV vendors, GLT will begin to ship light guide plates to Samsung Electronics in 2016, the company noted.

GLT recorded consolidated revenues of NT$7.062 billion (US$215 million) for 2015, increasing 13.15% on year. In terms of applications, light guide plates for illuminated keyboards in notebooks accounted for 46% of consolidated revenues, LCD TVs 28%, consumer electronics 12% and desktops 7%, GLT said.

Along with production at the new factory, GLT expects to ship 10 million light guide plates for LCD TVs in 2016 and consolidated revenues for the year to grow 10-20% on year, the company indicated. In particular, revenues from light guide plates used in small- to medium-size displays, including smart wearable devices launched by Fitbit, Pebble and Garmin, will increase from NT$700-800 million in 2015 to NT$1.0-1.1 billion in 2016, GLT said.
